Books: A Clear Road to Archangel

Quote from Jeremy Duns

Although I have only read one of his novels, I feel confident in saying that Geoffrey Rose is one of the great forgotten British thriller-writers. I discovered his book Nobody On The Road browsing through the shelves of a second-hand bookshop in Brussels in 2000, and was stunned by it. It was a thrilling adventure story, but told in such exquisite, haunting prose that I felt like I was reading The Dogs of War as rewritten by Kahlil Gibran. I tried to find out more about Rose, but there didn’t seem to be a scrap of information about him anywhere, other than that he had published a couple of other novels. I vowed to track those down and read them, but became waylaid by own writing. My first novel, Free Agent, has a slight Nobody On The Road resemblance, in that like that book it is set in a war-torn African nation with a British narrator. However, Rose’s deftness of touch was far beyond my capabilities, and I satisfied myself with having written a single sentence late on in the novel that I felt captured a little of his tone – that would have to do. I am delighted to discover that I’m not the only person who rates this author, and can’t wait to dig in and discover the pleasures of A Clear Road To Archangel.
